How to Remove Common and Tough Carpet Stains

Use this method to get your carpets cleaned of messy stains

If you have a carpet that has been stained, you need to look to find a solution ASAP. Sadly, most stains that fall on our carpets need near-immediate action, so if you are reading this post-stain, you are probably already against the clock. To get those carpets cleaned, you need to look at what you can do to help control that stain.

The messiest stains are rich in colour and high in fat/grease content. This is why dropping things like curry sauce on your carpet can be such a nightmare!

If you want to try and lift some of the more common stains in your carpet, then you should try the following methods.

Dealing with messy and tough stains on your carpet

The first thing you need to do when you have a stain on your carpet is to remove as much collateral damage as possible. If the stain is something like a wine or drink stain, then you should blot the stain as much as you can with some paper towels. Do not strain or push on the stain; blot it with the towels to soak up as much liquid as possible.

If this has bits, something like a soup or a curry, then you should scrape up as much of the ‘bits’ as you can by using a knife or spoon. Again, be gentle so that you do not force the material into the carpet. Then, blot the stain as noted above.

The next step then revolves around using something to try and take away as much of the mess as possible. For most stains, this can be as simple as getting some baking soda. For other stains, you might need to use a mixture of baking soda, vinegar, and/or dishwashing liquid. You should always read the material of your carpet on the care tag first, though, as this will give you a good idea of what works – and does not work – on the kind of carpet you have.

For some stains, you need to place some baking soda on top of the impacted area and then weigh down the baking soda overnight before vacuuming. For other stains, you might need to create a mixture of water, baking soda, vinegar, and potentially even some dishwashing liquid. Then, spray the stained area and leave the mixture to work for a short period of time. Then, dry the affected area and see what the stain looks like.

Most stains can be dealt with by using just baking soda, but greasier stains probably need something like dishwashing liquid. If you are ever uncertain, consult the company who fitted your carpet: they can give you an idea of what has to be done to clean up stains on that particular kind of carpet.

What if this does not work? What if your carpet stains stay in place?

If you have tried the above method, you are probably dealing with a carpet stain that needs more professional support. This might mean using more high-end cleaning tools, or using specific methods to combat whatever is in the stain itself.
