Try using baking soda before you hire professional carpet cleaners

When you have a carpet at home, it can almost feel ‘too easy’ to cause stains and damage. If you drop something on your carpet, you will likely need to deal with a stain forming. If your carpet has been stained, you might need to contact some pro carpet cleaners. Before you do that, though, you might want to try and use the catch-all of all cleaning aids: baking soda!

Baking soda might be something we commonly associate with baking cakes, but it has many great uses. For one, it is one of the best absorbents out there for getting rid of stains and smells. Baking soda works to help deodorise the spot that was impacted, lifting the damage and ensuring that it looks – and smells – as good as new once again.

So, before you go and hire the experts, try putting down some baking soda. More often than not, this can be just the solution you are looking for. Outside of the most serious stains, this should help to help up the stain in time.

How to use baking soda to clean your carpets

If you want to try and use baking soda for carpet cleaning, the first step to success will revolve around cleaning the stain. If you have dropped something that is more than just liquid – for example, you have spilt soup or a curry – make sure you use a knife to lift as much of the debris as possible. Avoid rubbing or forcing, though, as this will worsen the stain.

Once you have used a knife to help lift the mess, you should then blot the stain with some damp paper towels. Again, do not use anything excessive in terms of force or action; you want to soak up as much of the damage as you can. Once you have done this, you should get some baking soda. Pour the baking soda over the stain and be quite liberal with it; do not be shy!

After the baking soda has gone down, take some paper towels and lie them on top of the impacted area. Once you do this, place something on top of the towels to keep them in place – a doorstopper or a vase should be a good starting place. Now leave this for a minimum of three hours, but you should be looking to leave it overnight if you can.

When you next check the stain, lift the paper towels and vacuum the area with the baking soda. This should leave you with a nice, clean carpet. If the stain has not lifted entirely, try the above process again. If this still is not enough, then consider hiring a professional service.
